Joe Potter talks about his experiences in the Energy Industry with Schlumberger
What did you do at school?
BSC (Hons) Biotechnology and a PGDip Business Creation (both from University of Abertay Dundee). On finishing at Abertay (2001) I went to live and work in the Alps training to be an Alpine Ski Instructor and subsequently working as one. I feel this experience was invaluable and added to my academic education. Certainly my approach to a hazardous situation was tested many times as an instructor, helping me to appreciate the working environment of an offshore installation.
How did you find out about the Oil and Gas Industry?
My Dad worked in the industry working around the world. I guess because of this I had an insight into the industry and have always seen some of the opportunities it has to offer.
What do you like about the industry?
I like the amount of opportunities it has to offer and working with technology which is always being improved. I particularly like the working environment offshore. The team work involved in drilling a well (both on and offshore) will never cease to amaze me. It may be a cliche but the more you put into it the more you get out. The travelling opportunities are great as well - I have been with Drilling & Measurement for 13 months and have already been to Congo and Abu Dhabi, and am due to go to Houston in a couple of months.
Explain a little about the programme you are on with Schlumberger and how it benefited you and your career to date
I am a Measurement While Drilling (MWD) Field Specialist with Drilling & Measurements, Schlumberger, and I'm contracted to the North Sea. The position allows you to progress at your desired rate, and at the present climate this is as fast as you are prepared to put the work in and learn new tools and get the time at the well site. I thoroughly appreciate working for a company where you can see your progression in front of you and knowing that you will be backed by your manager and those around you.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career in Oil and Gas?
There's something for everyone in this industry and the encouragement you get from your employee (not just Schlumberger) is fantastic. It's not just about working offshore either, the opportunities onshore are equally as good. The places around the world I've seen as both a child in the industry and recently as an employee are fantastic and will certainly stay with me for the rest of my life!
What do you enjoying doing in your spare time i.e. hobbies, passions?
I enjoy playing rugby at Morgan F.P. R.F.C. in Dundee, as well as playing golf, and having a couple of beers with my mates (luckily these are all easy to do in Dundee!!). Also when I get the chance to return to the slopes for a break, I take it!
