What Qualifications / Training Did You Have When You Started?
I studied HNC Computing part time in the evening giving me the qualification to apply for the SDL Technician vacancy. Training for working offshore is fairly intensive with courses at the various training centres. On the job training is challenging due to busy schedules however this has encouraged me to use my initiative.
What Do You Like Best About Your Job?
The working environment and the people combined with how the job changes from day to day.
What Are The Challenges?
I learn new tasks and increase my knowledge within the job. It is important to take notes or keep a records of what I learn, for example I can be shown how to calibrate a sensor then maybe not do that type again for a couple of months.
What Skills Are Needed For Your Job?
A technical mechanical knowledge, a willingness to learn and a flexible approach to work.

Why Did You Go Into This Type Of Work?
I’ve always had an interest in engineering. Living in Aberdeen, the oil industry was the obvious choice and my previous offshore experience led to an interest in well intervention.
What Qualifications / Training Did You Have When You Started?
An engineering degree was a pre-requisite while my prior offshore experience was useful though not always directly relevant to well intervention.

Every day presents a new challenge, learning more about the oil industry and well intervention techniques.
What Are The Challenges?
Customer satisfaction is paramount. Adapting to their changing requirements can present great challenges.
What Skills Are Needed For Your Job?
An understanding of the fundamental principles of engineering and fluid mechanics. Communication skills are very important when liaising with the customer within Halliburton. Good communications with strong project management and organisational skills would be well suited to the role of Technical Professional.
